Come into force around February next year

According to the Wall Street Journal, men’s loafers are making a comeback. “Bergdorf Goodman’s men’s store, called Goodman’s, is making a big push with loafers this year,” writes the Journal‘s Ray A. Smith. “A factor behind the loafer proliferation is the move to more smart-casual dress codes at work…. And the big fashion influence is the runaway success of Gucci’s fur-lined loafers, launched last year.” Fur-lined? I think I’ll pass, lest I be accused of being a fancy boy.

As you can imagine, there were lots of opportunities for ridicule. (I did once have pennies in my penny loafers. Once.) “They are … an easy style to mock,” Smith says. “Their long association with blue bloods and the Ivy League provides good fodder for social media ribbing of men who wear loafers, especially those who, like TV anchorman Matt Lauer, do so without socks.” Again, guilty as charged.

But in my memory, there was a specific moment when loafers began to go out of fashion. It was during a speech given by President George H. W. Bush at the Republican National Convention in 1992:

Boom. President Bush dropped the mic and walked off the stage. Or at least that’s how I remember it. (I was in college so my memory is a bit foggy.) In any event, the quip got a lot of play at the time. “Bush Making ‘The Tasseled Loafer’ a Symbol of Nation’s Woes” was the headline from the Associated Press. The London Evening Standard asked, “Is Loafer Man a threat to life as we know it? George Bush has identified a new enemy in society: men who wear tasseled loafers. Could he possibly be right?” Even a year later, Neil A. Lewis wrote a column in the New York Timesentitled “The Politicization of Tasseled Loafers.” In short, loafers went through a Sideways Merlot moment.

White collection is the perfect way to show

China and South Korea are putting a long-running dispute behind them more than a year after Seoul’s decision to install a US Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system. The unexpected decision comes just days before US President Donald Trump begins his trip to Asia, where the North Korean nuclear crisis will be the focus.

As recently as last year, Seoul and Beijing had close political and economic relations. But Chinese opposition to South Korea’s installation of THAAD — which officials viewed as another American effort to contain China — soured the relationship. Korean tourism, cosmetics and entertainment were subsequently hit by Chinese backlash.

Both China and South Korea issued a joint statement on Tuesday agreeing to reset relations, which helped propel South Korean stocks to a record high. But while this reconciliation might also seem like good news for brands exporting “Brand Korea” to China, the reality is that despite a seemingly deteriorating relationship, trade between the two countries has been steadily growing over the past year — which means the mended relationship may only accelerate further growth.

South Korea’s exports to China for January to July in 2017 reached $76.2 billion, an 11.5 percent increase over the same period in 2016, according to the Korea International Trade Association, noting that export growth was predominantly driven by consumer goods and cosmetics, along with automobiles. South Korea’s total export sales for January to July in 2017 hit $328 billion, accounting for 3.6 percent of the world total of $9.142 trillion.

Tourism was also on the up last year. “The number of tourist arrivals from China decreased in 2015, but recovered to an 11 percent increase in 2016 to reach 6.6 million visitors. Overall retail expenditure by Chinese tourists in South Korea also increased by 10 percent in 2016,” said Euromonitor’s global luxury manager Fflur Roberts in a report. “This shows that South Korea maintains its strong attraction for wealthy Chinese tourists.”

While my skin care routine is fairly involved, my makeup sitch is much more relaxed. I don’t like to wear too much product other than under eye concealer, mascara and lipstick. Consider my love for Clinique eternal. When I was a freshman in college, Clinique was my introduction to Fancy Skincare. After dealing with years of finicky, zitty skin, my mom finally took me to Macy’s, where a woman in a white lab coat created a custom-made skincare routine for me, giving me blue and yellow and pink bottles, and a bonus mascara for spending over a hundred bucks. While I’m definitely not brand-monogamous, I still have a reserved place in my heart for Clinique, which is why I picked up a bottle of this exfoliating cleanser. My skin has been dry and lackluster lately, so I figured some daily (gentle) scrubbing would do it some good — and it has! Just after one day of use, my face looks and feels brighter.

Shhh Silk and the Beverly Hills Hotel teamed up to create a line of fabulous silk pajamas and sleep accessories in the hotel’s iconic palm print, and I’m personally VERY excited about this collab. I’m a huge fan of Shhh Silk (I wear their sleep masks to bed every single night; can’t sleep without ‘em) and I love anything palm print. I was lucky enough to go to the launch event last night at the Beverly Hills Hotel and try this silk sleep set firsthand. Clearly these pajamas are the height of glamour, but what you might not realize is that even though they are silk, they’re machine washable! Getting sidetracked on their search for the Vogue shot

While it’s still unclear if Hadid actually happened to wander onto the set of a Vogue photoshoot while being a tourist in Paris or if the supermodel-to-be was hired to be there looking like an unsuspecting tourist (she says she got “caught” in the pic), the photo is still a perfect example of how she was fated to become the powerhouse model that she is today.

While attending the Volez, Voguez, Voyagez Louis Vuitton exhibit event in New York, Zendaya went all out for the night.

Play catch up in fashion speed race

To pick up speed, companies like Gap Inc, American Eagle Outfitters and Macy’s Inc are placing smaller orders in more factories, and waiting until the last minute to say what colors and cuts the fabric should take. They are also slashing the time clothes spend in warehouses, industry experts said.

“The millenials, with their constant fickleness in product selection, speed, newness and freshness are very important and so there is a heightened need for traditional American brands to increase speed,” said Matt Katz, a partner at the Boston Consulting Group, which advises retailers.

Over the past few years, clothiers have shrunk their typical concept-to-store times down to about six to nine months, from a previously glacial 12 months.

That seems like a big improvement until you know what some competitors are capable of.

“The emergence of H&M and Zara and the ability of these companies to follow fashion trends and produce products in six weeks or less has added to the pressure,” Katz said.

Robert Hanson, American Eagle’s new chief executive, is looking for ways to cut down on delivery times and respond faster to styles and trends. Macy’s is trying to speed its decisions on what clothes to put on its shelves for young women.

How much further fashion retailers can go, or should go, in the quest for speed is a question that involves everything from margins to corporate culture and a reliance on cheap but distant Asian manufacturers.

“Traditional brands have a lot of layers of decision making,” said Jennifer Pritchard, a former executive with clothes retailer Chico’s and now with the Alvarez & Marsal business consultancy in Atlanta.

Companies like Uniqlo parent Fast Retailing Co, H&M owner Hennes & Mauritz AB, Forever21, and Zara owner Inditex, are popularly called “fast-fashion” retailers because of the speed with which they change their collections.

While still a small presence in America, H&M and Zara have doubled their footprint to 1 percent of the fragmented marketplace, according to Euromonitor International.

The gains have come at the expense of brands like Gap and American Eagle, which have also struggled with tight margins and consumer resistance to high prices. Both Zara and H&M have overtaken Gap as the biggest clothes retailers in the world.

Such tactics can create completely new “looks” for clothes in weeks.

Even Asian sources of clothes can be part of the fast fashion trend if a clothing line becomes a top seller.

“In Zara’s case, they operate chartered cargo flights once a week… from Bangladesh,” said Munir Mashooqullah, founder and president of Synergies Worldwide which acts as a middle man between retailers and manufacturers and counts Zara as a client.

Retailers have several plans for fighting back.

American Eagle is planning to cut down on the piles of t-shirts, dresses and jeans that stores have stocked up in the past. Hanson, the CEO, says he would rather have fewer items in stores, but sell everything.

In a conference call last month, Hanson said the company was “buying fashion to sell out”, echoing many of his peers.

Macy’s said it was planning to speed up decision making on buying and stocking clothes it offers to shoppers between the ages of 13 and 30, an effort clearly aimed at winning young shoppers back from fast fashion chains.

“We today are quicker to respond to trends in brands such as INC and Bar III so that our merchandise is current and fresh for the customer” said Macy’s spokesman Jim Sluzewski. Both these brands sell edgy and more fashion-oriented dresses and accessories to young women.

Retail experts say companies like Ralph Lauren Corp, Ann Inc, PVH Corp’s Tommy Hilfiger, VF Corp and Limited Brands have made progress as they build relationships with their manufacturers and experiment with newer ways of getting products to their stores.

Collection inspired by the Beverly Hills Hotel
